What IBIS Actually Does, and When It Doesn't Matter

IBIS appears on almost every camera spec sheet on this site, usually as a simple yes-or-no feature. What rarely gets explained is what it actually changes in real-world shooting, and whether it's worth paying extra for.

In short, IBIS (In-Body Image Stabilization) moves the camera's sensor to counter small hand movements, so the image stays steadier without changing how you shoot. It's different from a gimbal, and different from stabilization built into a lens, though many cameras combine both.

Where it actually shows up

Handheld video is where the difference is most obvious. Walking while filming, holding a camera at arm's length for a vlog-style shot, anything where your hand is naturally moving even a little, IBIS smooths that out. Without it, the same footage has a faint, constant jitter that's easy to miss when you're shooting and impossible to unsee once you notice it on a screen.

Low light stills is the other place it matters, in a less obvious way. A slower shutter speed lets in more light, but it also makes hand shake more visible in the final photo. IBIS buys you a few extra stops of usable shutter speed before that shake shows up, which in practice means fewer blurry photos in dim rooms without needing a flash or a tripod.

Quick warning before this sounds like a must-have: IBIS only stabilizes the camera. It can't freeze a moving subject. If a running kid, a pet, or an athlete comes out blurred, that calls for a faster shutter speed, not better stabilization.

Where it barely matters at all

Tripod work gets basically zero benefit. If the camera isn't moving, there's nothing for the stabilization system to correct. Some cameras even recommend turning IBIS off entirely for long-exposure tripod shots, since the system can occasionally introduce a very slight blur trying to correct for movement that isn't happening.

Wide-angle daylight photography is the other case where it's easy to overpay for. At a fast shutter speed in good light, camera shake was rarely going to be visible anyway, IBIS or not. Some of the cameras covered on this site skip IBIS entirely, and they aren't broken without it, they're just built for a use case where it matters less.

The common mistake

Treating IBIS as a blanket quality signal, assuming a camera with it is simply better than one without, regardless of what's actually being shot. It's a feature that solves one specific problem well. If that problem, handheld shake in video or low light, isn't the problem being solved, the camera without IBIS isn't a worse choice, it's just not paying for something that wouldn't get used.

The bottom line

IBIS earns its cost for handheld video and low-light stills. For tripod-based, well-lit, or fast-shutter work, it's a feature you'd be paying for and rarely calling on. Worth checking which situation actually describes how a camera gets used, rather than treating IBIS as a default upgrade.
