Crop Factor Explained: What 1.5x and 1.6x Actually Mean
Put the same 400mm lens on two cameras and one image comes back noticeably tighter. The lens didn't change. The sensor behind it did.
Crop factor is the ratio between a full-frame sensor and a smaller one. Canon's APS-C bodies use roughly 1.6x, Sony, Nikon, and Fujifilm's APS-C bodies use roughly 1.5x. Either way, the lens's real focal length and aperture never change. What changes is how much of the lens's image circle the smaller sensor actually captures, which narrows the field of view in the final photo or video.
Where it helps
Telephoto reach is the clearest example. A 100-400mm lens on a 1.6x crop body captures roughly the same field of view a 160-640mm lens would on full frame, without paying for the size, weight, or cost of a genuinely longer lens. That's not a technicality wildlife and sports photographers exploit by accident, it's a real reason to choose a crop-sensor body on purpose. The subject fills more of the frame for the same glass.
Worth being precise here: the lens itself is still a 400mm lens, its focal length and aperture haven't changed. What's different is framing, the smaller sensor only captures the center portion of what the lens projects, which is why the result looks like more reach even though nothing about the lens did.
Where it costs you
The same multiplier works against wide-angle shooting. A 16mm lens on a 1.6x crop body frames like roughly 26mm would on full frame, noticeably tighter than what the lens was built to capture. Interiors, architecture, and group shots in a small room all feel that squeeze. APS-C-specific ultrawide lenses exist to compensate, so crop sensors aren't locked out of wide shooting, it just means buying a wider lens than the equivalent full-frame shot would need.
One more piece worth knowing: framing isn't the only thing that shifts. A 50mm f/1.8 stays a 50mm f/1.8 for exposure purposes on any sensor size, the aperture itself doesn't change. But when two photos are framed to match, shot from the same distance on different sensor sizes, the depth of field looks different between them too. That's a separate effect from crop factor itself, worth knowing they're not the same thing.
The common mistake
Treating crop factor as simply good or simply bad instead of matching it to what's actually being shot. The same multiplier that helps a 400mm lens reach further hurts a 16mm lens trying to go wide. Neither sensor size is the better one in general, the multiplier just rewards long lenses and costs something on short ones, every time, regardless of brand.
