XLR vs USB Microphones: What the Interface Actually Buys You

A $300 XLR microphone doesn't automatically sound better than a $150 USB mic sitting next to it. What gets paid for with XLR is a different kind of recording setup, not automatically better sound the moment it's plugged in.

A USB microphone has its preamp and analog-to-digital conversion built into the mic itself, so it connects straight to a computer with nothing else needed. A traditional XLR microphone sends an analog signal instead, which normally needs a separate interface or mixer to supply gain and convert it into something a computer can record.
