Setting Up a Two-Person Podcast Without Buying Two of Everything

One host is easy: mic goes to interface, interface goes to computer. Add a second host and only one part of that chain actually becomes a bottleneck, the interface's input count. Everything else people assume needs duplicating usually doesn't.

What actually doubles

The physical parts that belong to the second speaker: a second mic, a second XLR cable, a second stand or arm. The Shure SM7B works exactly the same way it does solo, one per host, no change to the mic itself.

Room bleed is worth one line too: two cardioid mics in the same room aren't automatically isolated from each other. Keep each SM7B close to its own speaker, and orient it so the rejection side faces the other voice where the room layout allows it.

When a 2i2 is enough

For two people in the same room, sharing a computer, recording locally, this is genuinely sufficient. Where it stops being enough: three or more hosts, or a setup where each person needs a fully independent recording rather than a shared one.

Recording remotely instead? Neither host needs to share an interface at all, each records locally on their own single-input setup and the files get combined afterward.
