Sony Announces FE 100-400mm F5.6-8 OSS, a Budget Super-Telephoto for E-Mount

Sony just announced the FE 100-400mm F5.6-8 OSS, a new full-frame telephoto zoom for the E-mount system. It ships in September at $849.99 USD, and it fills a gap Sony's own lineup has had for a while: a genuinely affordable way to reach 400mm.

Here's the thing nobody puts in a spec sheet: Sony isn't pretending this is a G or G Master lens. In its own materials, Sony pitches this one explicitly for "hobbyist photographers... from birders to parents." PetaPixel reported that Sony has been upfront the lens won't match the resolution, overall image quality, or bokeh of the company's G and G Master glass. That's an unusually direct admission from a manufacturer, and it tells you exactly who this lens is for.

The tradeoff that gets you the price: a variable aperture that drops to f/8 by 220mm, well before you're anywhere near the 400mm end. That's slow. If you shoot in good light outdoors, a bird in a tree or a kid's soccer game on a sunny afternoon, it won't be a problem. Indoor sports or dim conditions at full zoom will push your ISO hard.

What you do get: a genuinely light lens for the reach. Sony lists it at about 654g, which is meaningfully lighter than competing 100-400mm options from Sigma. For anyone who already finds a long lens exhausting to carry around a zoo or a soccer field for three hours, that weight difference is the kind of thing you actually feel, even if it never shows up in a spec comparison.

Other confirmed details: dual linear autofocus motors capable of keeping up with 120fps burst shooting on bodies like the Alpha 9 III, a 9-blade aperture, dust and moisture resistance, and compatibility with Sony's SEL20TC teleconverter for extra reach in a pinch. It's a real, current-generation lens, just built to a price rather than to a spec sheet ceiling.

Quick warning before you get excited: this isn't a replacement for Sony's existing 70-350mm G lens if you're mostly shooting on an APS-C body like an a6700. That lens still makes more sense for APS-C shooters chasing tighter framing at a shorter physical length. The new 100-400mm is a full-frame lens first, and it's most interesting for full-frame shooters who've been priced out of Sony's GM telephoto lineup and don't want to buy third-party.
